Volunteer Schools

1) I have spend 41/2 hrs volunteering at the schools, but I also have two more hours next week which will make a total of 61/2 hrs of volunteering.
2) It was very interesting to see all of the different students tech skills.  There were some students whose skills were way more superior than mine.  Their was this boy who took thousands of still pictures, and put them all together to make a movie that had the characters moving and everything.  The first school that I volunteered at I noticed the students did not have much motivation, but then the teacher was kind of boring.  The school school I was at the students were fully engaged the whole time.  They were excited, and they were making some awesome movies.
3) I learned that I need to improve my tech skills.  I have always been fine at doing things for myself, but trying to help the students was a little difficult.  The first school I went to the teacher actually did not know how to do garage band, so I taught the class how to use garage band.  It was fun to actually teach the kids, and it made me realize you really have to know your skills in order to teach them to someone else.
4) I would like to start blogging at least once a week.  I love to coupon, and people are always asking me how I do it.  I feel like if I start a blog explaining everything that it would be very beneficial to my friends and family.
I would also like to this summer create some podcasts that will correspond with my lessons.  I would like to have this done before I start student teaching, so that I do not have to worry about making them while I am student teaching.

Internet Safety Reflection

As a health teacher I think teaching internet safety, and cyber ethics are very important!!!!!! I have actual lessons on internet safety, cell phone safety, and cyber ethics.  Standard 4 in the health curriculum is that students will demonstrate the ability to apply prevention and intervention knowledge, skills, and processes to promote safety in the home, school, and community.  Within that standard we have objective 4 that has us examine the dangers of inappropriate use of current technology.  The internet is a fantastic tool that provides us with opportunities that we would not have if we did not have the internet.  The internet can also cause damage though if it is not used appropriately.  We have many students today who are committing suicide because they were bullied over the internet, or they have been made fun of through different websites like face-book.  As a future health teacher, I do not ever want to hear about my students committing suicide or anything remotely close to that.  In order to insure this I am going to make sure that I have lessons that teach internet safety.  I also believe that internet safety, and cyber ethics are something that as teachers we need to constantly remind our students about.  We can not expect our students to learn about it once, and then think they will always be safe.  We need to continually teach them, and warm them about new dangers that may be appearing.
Some ways that I can address these issues in class are that they will have individual lessons on each topic, and I am going to give my students different challenges.  For example, on cell phone safety my students will have to put their phone away for an entire day.  I could give my students the challenge of not using the internet for playing games, face-book, and etc for an entire week.  I also think it would be a good idea to have a cyber awareness week.  I could have my students create fliers, posters, movies, and etc that could educate the public on cyber ethics.
Health is a subject that I can easily have my students make fliers, brochures, and newsletters as their assessments.  During the nutrition unit they can make a newsletter about the dangers of different fad diets.  They could make a flier that lets people know the signs and symptoms of eating disorders, drugs, and alcohol.  In almost every single one of my standards I can incorporate a flier, or a newsletter for their assessments.

UEN Reflection

I wish I would have known about all of the resources UEN had to offer before now.  As I kept clicking on new things I could not believe the immense amount of material that is offered on UEN.  UEN is a fantastic tool for teachers, and I for sure will use it in my classroom on a everyday basis.  One of my favorite tools that I will use is the SIRS searching.  When I have been looking for information to use in my lessons I get really frustrated when I can not find what I am looking for.  I love how SIRS is directly related to your core curriculum.  That makes searching a whole lot easier.
I also found Pioneer Library to be very useful.  I loved how I could find journals that were directly related to my content core.  As I was looking at them I wanted to just read the journal articles because they were all very interesting.  I know I will use these journal articles to deepen my own understanding, and I will have my students go to these articles for assigned readings.
Something that I had never seen before was the website Wordle that randomized all of the words.  I immediately thought it would be neat to make some of those into posters to hang up in the room when I am covering that unit.  There were many interactives that would be great to use in a health class.  I would love to promote my students to use these interactives on a daily basis.  Students now have the opportunity to build a meal planner right on their phones.  I would love to always have interactives on my websites that students will have the opportunity to go to for either assignments or extra credit.
I also really like the lesson plans, and core curriculum.  I love being able to refer to the core that is always nice.  I also love the lesson plans because they spark ideas that I am able to build upon.  It was nice to know that there are movies, music, games, and etc at my disposal to use.  I found the UEN website to be fantastic, and I am very excited to use it's resources.

Google Reflection

Google Images, Google Video, Youtube
* Google Images is something I will definitely use in my classroom.  I will use the advanced google search to find images that I can use in my power-points.  Google images is something my students can use when they have to make their own power-points, or to find any images for any projects.
*Google Videos, and Youtube are one of my favorite things about google.  Youtube has awesome videos that I can show to really make an impact on my students lives.  When I am teaching on body image I can use the Dove Commercial from youtube.  Youtube has endless videos that I can use to enhance my lessons.

Google Maps & Google Earth
* Google Maps & Google Earth can be used in my classroom when the students have to create a workout plan.  The students can go to google maps, and map out different runs they could take.  They will be able to see how many miles each of the different runs are.  I can also use google maps to create directions if we are going on a filed trip, or to show where different places are located.  For example, I could make a google map to show where my students can go to participate in healthy exercises.

Google News:
*I choose to follow some news on STD's.  Being a health teacher I definitely need to stay up to date on news because in health the news is constantly changing.  STD's are rising here in Utah, and Utah County even has it's own strain of chlamydia.  If I am able to stay up to date on the new news I will be able to better inform my students on the dangers that can effect their lives.  If my students are following the news on either their own igoogle, or a reader they will increase their chances retaining the information.  Repetition is key, so if students are learning about something in my class, and then following it in the news they will be able to retain the information easier.

Google Translate
*I am very excited to be able to use google translator with my students that may not speak English, or with their parents.  I have noticed how many parents of students do not communicate with their kids teachers because they do not speak English.  I could use google translate in emails, letters, and etc that I have in order to communicate with parents.  I could also have my students learn about the health that other students have in other nations by writing letters to pen pals.  They could use google translator if the pen pal does not speak English.

Google Books & Google Scholar
* One of my favorite things about google books, and google scholar is that you can find books and articles for free.  Our students are also able to read books online, and they do not have to haul a book around.      With health changing so fast google scholar is perfect for students to find information on different subjects.  They can research different drugs, and then make a movie on the dangers of drugs.  I can use google scholar everyday in preparing my lessons to make sure I have accurate information.

Google Blogs, and Google Reader
* I love the idea of having the students create a blog that will be their daily journal.  Many students will lose a journal when they are carrying it from school to home everyday.  Having the students create a blog that is their journal will allow that they to not lose it, and I will be able to go in and grade them.  They will still be able to do still write in their daily journal when I am grading it because they do not have to physically turn it in.  I also think google reader is an awesome organizer that will allow students to stay up to date on the news they would like to follow.

Google Calendar
*This is probably the google tool that I love the most.  Google Calendar allows you to organize your time in such a way that you are able to get everything accomplished.  As a teacher time management is very important.  I like how you can access google calendar everywhere.  I will use google calendar to managing my time, and I will also encourage my students to use a calendar to keep track of their assignments.  I like how google calendar breaks the day up in hours this allows users visually to see how much time they really have, or don't have in a day.

Google Documents
*If my students have a lap top I will encourage my students to take notes in something like a google document because then their notes our on the web, and they will not lose them.  I can also have my worksheets, homework, and etc on google documents because then my students will always have access to them.  When my students are doing projects on their different vitamins they can collaborate with other students if they are doing it in a google document.  This will be especially helpful if students do not live close enough to physically get together.  I can also use google documents to collaborate with other teachers on lesson plans, behavior problems, and etc.

Google Health
* Google Health is awesome as a future health teacher.  I can have my students enter in all of their information in google health.  They will be able to see what area's of their health needs to be improved.  It will give the students links to where they can go learn more information that is personalized to them.  I can have my students use this when they have to make a healthy habit.  The students have to choose a habit they need to change in order to improve their health.  Having google health is somewhere they can go to see what area's of their health they need to improve.  It also provides all of their information to be stored, and neatly organized in one place.

Google Sites

How many of you guys have looked in the mirror, and have not liked what you have seen? You are not alone if you have thought this. 80% of normal women think they are overweight, and 41% of men are dissatisfied with their weight. This statistics are alarming, and as a future health teacher I am excited to be able to teach my students on what a healthy body image is.

All about Me!

Hi,  I have always wanted to create a blog, but I have been to busy to figure out how to do it.  I now know how to create a blog though, so I can join the world of blogging.  My name is Shianne Healey, and I am married to the love of my life.  It so happens that my husband and I both have the same name as Shianne, but he spells his name chyane.  I love the warm weather more than anything else.   I love to do things like boat, swim, hike, anything that is outdoors in the warm weather.  I also love to read, so if I am out of school most likely you will find me reading a book.  I am currently a full time student at Utah Valley University, and I work about twenty hours a week cleaning people's houses.  I love life, and I am excited to see what the future holds.
